ABSTRACT

Migration in the Himalayan region has occurred since ancient times, whether in trade or due to weather changes. With time, the types of migration and their purpose changed, and they emerged as permanent or temporary migration, which is currently being done to obtain facilities like education, health, and employment. This research examines the various forms, trends, causes, and implications of out-migration, focusing on the level of out-migration in the Chamoli district. There are nine blocks in the Chamoli district, and one village was taken from each block for the study. Data for the study was collected from 9 villages within the district, where 90 households were surveyed. 10 households were selected from each village. Resulting in a comprehensive sample representative of Chamoli. The authors developed a systematic questionnaire to ask family members about the different types of migration they experience, including where they migrate, the reasons for migrating, and the effects of their migration. The author also examined the age, sex, income, occupation, and education levels of the migrants. According to the study, out-migration in the Chamoli district has emerged as a significant issue, leading to various socio-economic problems.
